Legend has it that a demon named Darukasura and his wife Daruki troubled the devotees in this region. The Grishneshwar Temple, located near Aurangabad in Maharashtra and close to the famous Ellora Caves. It is the twelfth and the last of the 12 Jyotirlingas. According to Hindu scriptures, this temple holds immense spiritual significance and is associated with a devoted woman named Ghushma (or Grishna). Legend narrates that Ghushma was a devotee of Lord Shiva who would immerse a lingam in a tank daily and then retrieve it. Her jealous sister-in-law threw the lingam into the tank. That causing Ghushma great sorrow. However, Lord Shiva appeared in his Jyotirlinga form and restored Ghushma’s devotion. Hence the name Grishneshwar. It was rebuilt in the 18th century by Ahilya Bai Holkar, who also renovated the Kashi Vishwanath Temple. The shikhar is intricately carved. Also the overall structure exudes a sense of serenity and antiquity.
