Nainital sits at about 2,084 metres above sea level and is built around the beautiful Naini Lake. It is one of the most visited hill stations in North India and the starting point of this tour. The lake, the cable car ride, the busy Mall Road, and the surrounding smaller lakes like Bhimtal, Sattal, and Naukuchiatal make Nainital a place that keeps you busy and happy at the same time.
You will spend the first part of your trip here — exploring the lake town, taking a boat ride, visiting Naina Devi Temple, and just soaking in the mountain air.
From Nainital, the tour moves to Kausani — a quiet hilltop village in Bageshwar district that sits at 1,890 metres. Mahatma Gandhi once stayed here for 15 days and was so moved by its beauty that he wrote his famous commentary on the Bhagavad Gita here.
The main attraction of Kausani is its unbroken 300-km panoramic view of the Himalayan peaks — including Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Panchachuli. On a clear morning, this view is genuinely one of the finest you will find anywhere in India.
You will also visit the Kausani Tea Estate, Anasakti Ashram, Sumitranandan Pant Gallery, and the ancient Baijnath Temple — all within a comfortable day.
The tour ends in Ranikhet, a calm cantonment hill station at around 1,829 metres. Ranikhet is less crowded than Nainital and has a very different feel — wide open spaces, tall pine forests, neat army roads, and views of the snowy Himalayan range.
The highlights here include the famous Chaubatia Orchard (which spreads over 265 acres), the Jhula Devi Temple with its wall of bells, the Army Golf Course — one of the highest in Asia — and the Kumaon Regimental Centre Museum. It is a great place to wind down before heading back.
