Vishnuprayag

Vishnuprayag is one of Alaknanda River’s Panch Prayags and is situated at the junction of Alaknanda River and Dhauliganga River in Uttarakhand district of Chamoli. It is a popular place of pilgrimage in the state of Uttarakhand. The Alaknanda River, which originates from the eastern slopes of Chaukhamba glacier fields, is joined by the Saraswathi River near Mana, and then flows past the Badrinath temple. It then meets the Vishnuprayag forming the Dhauli Ganga River which originates from the Niti Pass.

Vishnuprayag is the first of Panch Prayag, and the other four are Nandaprayag, Karnaprayag, Rudraprayag, and Devprayag according to the descending order of the Alakananda River, which meets four other Holy Ganga tributaries in four different locations. Vishnuprayag derives his name from Lord Vishnu who appeared to sage Narada at this spot. A staircase from this temple leads to the place at the confluence. Until entering the temple, most of the pilgrims take a dip in nearby Vishnu kund.
