One of the most holiest places in Central India, Triveni Sangam is situated in Allahabad (Prayagraj) about 7 kilometers from Civil Lines. It is the meeting point of three rivers-Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati (which is a mythical river, supposedly dried up more than 4,000 years ago). This is one of the locations where the Kumbh Mela takes place once every 12 years. According to the Hindu calendar i.e. the Panchanga the exact date of the Mela is set. In Indian mythology, all three rivers Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati are highly revered rivers, and thus the confluence point of those rivers bear considerable religious significance.
According to Hindu mythology, taking a bath is meant to wash away all the sins in the holy Triveni Sangam and free you from the process of rebirth. The Sangam itself is also a beautiful and tranquil place to visit. The slightly greenish Yamuna meet the brownish Ganga is indeed a sight to behold. The Sangam also has small wooden banks. So devotees who want can take a bath right at the point of confluence. At the Triveni Sangam the water is clean enough for a bath, particularly during the winters; and also not very cold, so it’s pleasant to take a dip here in the water.
