Tomb of itimad-ud-daulah

Tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah is a Mughal mausoleum situated on the western bank of the Yamuna River, near the Yamuna Bridge Railway Station in Agra, at a distance of 8 km from Agra Cantonment Railway Station and 3 km from Agra Fort. The tomb is also known as the Jewel Box or Baby Taj, because it looks like a smaller Taj Mahal version. It is one of the popular tourist destinations in Agra and also one of the top attractions that you must include in the packages in Agra. This tomb is believed to have been the impetus behind constructing the Taj Mahal.

Itimad-ud-Daulah is India’s first monument completely made of marble. The grave was built between 1622 and 1628 as a memorial to her father, Mirza Ghiyas, by the Queen of Jahangir, Nur Jahan. Mirza Ghiyas was an imperial general, and Emperor Jahangir conferred the title of Itmad-ud-Daulah (State Pillar).

The grave complex consists of a central hall that houses Mirza Ghiyas Beg’s tomb and his companion, Asmat Begum. A sandstone staircase leads to the first floor, where an elegant oblong dome overlooking a pavilion with pinnacles overlooking the central hall is located. The ground-floor cenotaphs and walls contain inscription in Persian. The inscriptions on the wall are from the Quran and other holy texts, while the inscriptions on the cenotaph state the names and titles of those interned.
