Demon Tarkasur started threatening gods and killing saints and Sages. then they prayed to God Shiva and his son Kartikeya killed Tarkasur but at the time of death Tarkasur makes prayer to Lord Shiva and asked for forgiveness. Then Mahadev given his name to this temple where Tarkasur worshiped him. That’s why this temple is known as Tarkeshwar Mahadev temple of dev bhumi Uttarakhand.
