Ram bagh garden

The Ram Bagh Garden is situated near to Chini ka Rauza in Agra, at a distance of 9 km from Agra Cantonment Railway Station and 3.5 km from Itimad-ud -Daulah. It is one of Agra city’s popular sightseeing spots.

The Ram Bagh is India’s oldest Mughal Garden, originally built in 1528 by the Mughal Emperor Babur. Babur was buried there briefly, before being moved to Kabul. The bagh’s original name was Aram Bagh, which under the Marathas was changed to Ram Bagh when they ruled Agra from 1775 until 1803 AD. The first recorded mention of this garden as the Bagh-Nur-Afshan led some scholars to conclude that a garden in Kabul had originated this name.

This garden’s architecture is based on Gardens in Persian style. Three levels have been built in the garden, one for flowers and vegetables, the other for flower beds, with fine paved stone terraces and a kiosk, and the third has walls, terraces and tanks. With cool and fresh breezes, thick greenery of trees and cool colors, and rushing water through canals and cascades, the river bank has made it an extremely nice place to relax in Agra’s hot climate. Jahangir had been known to be very fond of this lovely garden.

The garden is surrounded by monumental walls with corner towers topped with pillared pavilions. Stone paved tracks divide the garden into parts. There is another terrace on the north-east side, from which steps lead to a Hammam. There is a row of abandoned houses on the north side of this garden with a gateway, built using red sandstone.

Entry Fee: Indians Rs. 10 and foreigners Rs. 100.
